Hear me out…
I watched Obsession, a movie about radical Islam that was sent out to 28 million people as an ad for popular newspapers/other publications. The short film basically makes the point that being “politically correct” about Islam and Muslim culture is making America vulnerable to terrorists and extremists. The argument is that “whitewashing” issues is the dangerous because it prevents Americans from judging radicals in a radical way.
This bothers me. It makes respect, tolerance and all that good stuff that only comes with noticing the bad too, danger, radicalism, extremism, seem superficial and naive.
The danger is in assuming that there is one mainstream opinion. Tolerance, respect is the first step in taking a risk, thinking as an individual and blasting that assumption. There’s nothing naive or innocent about thinking of oneself and others as individuals despite extremism, radicalism, violence, war in the world. If anything, it’s considered wise to see both sides, take everything that appears into account and make an individual decision. If nothing else, it’s a democratic way of thinking.
So, I decided to come up with a short film playlist of my own after the break.
Here’s one of my favorite Chris Rock videos. There’s some extreme language.
